             Section Two: .
One example of sustainability in business would be Anita Roddick, the founder of the Body Shop. Roddick, who is known as the inventor of sustainable retailing, started the Body Shop in 1976 in Brighton. Roddick's first shop only sold 15 lines, the products were packed in large and small bottles so that the customers could try a product before buying a large amount - this is a business philosophy that is still used today. She also implemented a refill service, which allowed customers to reuse their empty bottles instead of throwing them away. This cuts down on waste tremendously and also saves company expenditures. Body Shop products also were not tested on animals and their packaging was kept to a minimum to avoid causing any unnecessary waste.
Sustainable retailing isn't difficult and businesses can even profit from it as well, all it takes is a little innovative thinking and planning. Employing a facilities manager could help to give you ideas and to focus on your environmental strategies. In a small retail business environment, you can do simple things like Anita Roddick has done when she first started the body shop, like cutting down on packaging, implementing refill services and just simply recycling. However, in a large corporate environment, there are many other options to make the commitment to sustainability. .
             Section Three:.
Committing to sustainability means, NOT producing products which:.
Consume a disproportionate amount of energy during manufacture or disposal.
             Generate excessive wastes.
             Use ingredients from threatened habitats.
             Are obtained by cruelty.
             OR.
Cause adverse effects on other countries.
If you are willing to make a commitment to sustainability, you can consider applying for EU Eco-Labelling. Applying for EU Eco-Labelling is simple; all you have to do is show an interest in environmental management and work towards some simple goals. EMAS (the Eco Management Audit Scheme) will review your progress and if you fail to reach your goals they will offer you extra help to achieve them.
