Food Waste in the UK

According to the 'UK Love Food Hate Waste' approximately 7 million tonnes of food and drinks from homes in the United Kingdom are being wasted every year. Of this, more than half of the food products that are wasted are still perfectly fine to eat or drink. This is a large amount of food which is being thrown out. The act of throwing food out is a terrible though, but there are also several bad consequences to the wastefulness of food. One rather large consequence of food waste is the economic loss. In 2013, the price of food waste in the United Kingdom alone is adding up to £470 a year per household without children and £700 for families with children ("The Facts about Food Waste.", 2014). The problem is not only an economic waste issue, food waste also has a huge environmental impacts. .
There is a lot of money to save by reducing food waste.

According to the UK based non-profit organisation Love Food Hate Waste, "If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the benefit to the planet would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road" ("UK Love Food Hate Waste", 2014). In addition, If we were to plant trees on the land that is "currently used to grow an unnecessary surplus of food of which much of it will become waste, then this would offset a theoretical maximum of 100 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion" (Stuart, Tristram, 2009). When doing a brief research on food waste, we see that many organisations and also the media are more and more focused on the food waste. However, it is not a subject we personally find discussed amongst our friends and family.
Our interest in the subject of food waste occurs due to many reasons in addition to the facts that are already stated above. There is much evidence worldwide showing that food waste affects the planet negatively, which makes us wonder why and how food waste is still ongoing today.
