Euthanasia means the choice to help a person die. Euthanasia can be done with the aid of medication, or by withholding means of life support in order that this person's life will end sooner than dying of a natural death. Sometimes a person is suffering such pain that it seems to be almost cruel for this person to go on living such an agonizing life. Besides suffering from pain, one can be deformed in such a way that they could never live a normal life. In instances like these the decision is sometimes made to help them to stop the suffering. .
It has been argued that the person who is suffering should have the choice as to whether he wants to go on living or the choice to end his suffering by choosing to "commit suicide." A family member sometimes has to make the choice for this person, because the person is not of sound mind to make such a decision. In some cases the decision can be made by the patient's physician to cut off any means of life support that this person has been receiving. In such a case the physician has made the decision that there is no hope of this person surviving and that prolonging his life is just prolonging the inevitable.
Many people, because of religious beliefs, have argued that it should not be the choice of the sick person or anyone else, as to whether one should die. They believe that this is a choice that is reserved for God only. They believe that to make this choice of deliberately killing or letting one die is a sin, and a hand in a good killing or mercy killing, is nothing more that a murderer.
In some cases the patient is in so much pain that he believes that he is not able to bear to live with the pain any longer. At the time he believes that his only way out is death. Should he be able to choose to die even though there is a good chance that his quality of life will improve? Should the physician be able by law to consent to the patient's wishes even though he believes that the patient will get better with time? This is a big factor in people's arguments against euthanasia.
