In high school health classes students are exposed to topics that they will most likely experiment during their high school years, such as alcohol. The use of alcohol is a very well known matter in teens, which is the first new thing they try. Since teenagers are not permitted to drink, they feel that there is something wonderful about it and decide to try it. As teenagers students have very open and curious minds, and love to do the opposite of what an adult tells them not to do. During the health classes students are taught all of the problems and consequences alcohol can bring to a person, but they do not teach the health benefits of alcohol. If the health benefits of alcohol are instructed to high school students they will learn the responsibility of drinking at the proper age, they will be more informed, and they will make wiser decisions about drinking.
A reason why health teachers should instruct the health benefits of alcohol to high school students is because it will show them the responsibility of drinking at the proper age. Even though alcohol has health benefits does not mean that a teenager should start drinking. The health benefits will only help a middle aged man who is a moderate drinker. The health benefits of alcohol will not help a teenager because of his/her under developed body and brain. Instead it will damage the body and can severely harm the brain. Also if students decide to wait till the age of twenty one to drink students will be mature enough, and realize that they do not need to drink in order to have a good life (Wholey 41).
An advantage that students will have if taught the benefits of alcohol is that they will be more informed of what alcohol is capable of doing when not being abused. Students will learn that alcohol is bad for a person if they drink massive amounts because it can lead to alcohol poisoning, and addiction. The only way a person can get health benefits out of alcohol is by being a moderate drinker.
