John Locke

 

            It is said in the state of war that by declaring war against someone is allowing the opportunity for his life to be taken away. It also states that one has the right to destroy anything that one is threatened by (which is from the state of nature). Power is the main idea that connects war and slavery. According to Locke, when one's power is taken away he is vulnerable. If, during a state of war, one conquers the other, the loser has his power taken away. If one is taken into someone else's power, they can be enslaved. This power overrules one's freedom and they no longer can decide what happens. .
             For slavery to take place there must be a state of war between two persons. As stated on page 12, "for if once compact enter between them and make an agreement for a limited power on the one side and obedience on the other, the state of war ceases- Therefore, there must be some disagreement between these two persons that would allow one to enslave the other. If there is no conflict between the two, then there are no grounds for war to take place. .
             It is a man's will to be free and live under his own power. The only power that a man must live under is from the government and one must trust the government to not take away their freedoms. The idea of being enslaved when another takes one's power away is unfair. It almost seems as if it goes against the state of nature that everyone is equal on some levels. This idea of equality is taken away when power is lost and put in someone else's hands without their consent.
