The quadriceps is a powerful knee extensor used in activities such as climbing, running and rising from a seated position. The femoral nerve innervates this muscle group. The tone of quadriceps plays an important role in strengthening the joint.

The hamstrings are the fleshy muscles of the posterior thigh. They are bicep femoris, semitendinosus and semimembranosus. They cross both the knee and hip joint and are prime movers of knee flexion. The hamstrings have a common origin site. They are innervated by the sciatic nerve. The ability of the hamstrings to act on one of the two joints spanned depends on which joint is fixed.
Hamstring Muscle O & I Description.
Bicep Femoris Origin Ischial tuberosity (long head), linea aspera & distal femur (short head).
Insertion Common tendon passes downward and laterally to insert into fibula and lateral condyle of tibia.
Semitendinosus Origin Ischial tuberosity in common with long head of bicep femoris.
Insertion Medial aspect of upper tibial shaft.
Semimembranosus Origin Ischial tuberosity.
Insertion Medial condyle of tibia.
