The first, role playing games (RPG's), are typically fantastical games where the player can create his own unique character and interact with other player's characters. The second, first person shooters (FPS's), is a game where each player assumes the role of similar characters who all have the same abilities. This is a war type game where each player will join a team and work together to complete a certain objective. Both games can have the same effect. The players become so involved in becoming the best at the game that they lose a sense of time. They play for endless hours, ignoring everything else in their lives. This is, fortunately, a very small percentage of the players. Almost all players can enjoy the game without this problem.
The most prominent fear parents associate with violent video games is that they will make their children more violent. This is a topic of great debate, even among experts. Several studies have shown that excessive exposure to violent media causes increases in aggressive behavior; however, several other studies have shown that violent media does not have these affects and can even decrease aggressive behavior. This is because every child is different. Some kids can be very gentle and friendly people and still play violent video games frequently. Other children will play these games and start showing signs of violent behavior. It is for this reason that the only persons capable of deciding which games a child can play are the child's parents.
Video games do have plenty of benefits as well. They do not get the same attention as the possible dangers, but they are no less important. Many of today's games are multiplayer and provide a fun and social form of entertainment. In the technological world that kids are growing up in today, it is important that they are exposed to technology. Mastering a game can also be very positive for a child's self esteem and confidence.
