When people make a choice to retire, it is not only a decision that affects them personally, but also a decision that affects the people closest to them, especially their adult children. There are several outcomes that can occur when the decision to retire is made, but there are two in particular that can lead toward developing negative feelings toward each other. The retired parents can either look to their adult children for entertainment and companionship or the adult children can look at the parents for help with financial or day to day activities such as taking care of the children. All of these retired parent - adult child relationships can be based on several aspects such as location, emotional attachment, and feelings of obligation toward one another (Szinovacz 191). Retirement can be either disappointing or surreal depending on one's expectations. As Szinovvacz points out, "Both parents and adult children may either feel uncertainty or have unrealistic expectations about their relationship after the parents" retirement" (191). For example, many retired adults have the desire to travel with their money saved over the years, but if their adult child comes to them with the need for the money the retired adults are put in an awkward position. Depending on the parents feeling of obligation toward their child can leave them high and dry after all their hard work. The role can also be reversed. The retired parent may be bored as their social network changes because most of their friends are still in the working world and now look to their adult child for companionship. Although an adult child may not have the time needed to fulfill their parent's desire, they may sacrifice their own good based on the feeling of obligation toward their parent.
