THE GROWTH OF COCA-COLA.
By Alexander Gordon .
Coca-Cola Corporation has a rich and sophisticated history. An Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton has developed cola's secret formula in 1886. The name was devised by his bookkeeper Frank Robinson, after two key ingredients, the South American coca leaf and the African kola nut.
Asa Candler, a Georgia businessman bought the rights to Coca-Cola for $23 thousand from Pemberton in 1889 (Ramsey, 1987). To expend the business Candler began to sell Coca-Cola syrup to wholesalers and they in turn sold it to drugstores where it was mixed with carbonated water and served at soda fountains. Benjamin Thomas and Joseph Whitehead offered Candler to bottle Coca-Cola. They picked up this idea in Cuba where they noticed a beverage of some sort been consumed from bottles.
