Santeria

They speak in guttural manner and in a language combined with African and Spanish words. (Gonzalez-Wippler 1989: 78-80).
Sometimes, a blood sacrifice is necessary to "feed- one's spirit guide, but only when the person's life is in danger. The santero sacrifices a rooster or a chicken. As the blood spills on a clay vessel, the santero prays to the eggun and offers the blood to Oloddumare (through the eggun). Rubbing rituals are lesser cleansing rituals that one can carry out without the help of a santero or a babalawo. The person rubs his body from head to toe with a paper bag that contains a piece of meat or raw soup bone that has been smeared with palm oil, rum and cigar smoke. A more elaborate cleansing ritual occurs during a registro (consultation). The eggun will stand back to back and lock arms with the possessed santero's back and will be carried around the room that way while the eggun prays. The negative energy of the person will be transferred to the eggun, who will banish it using his powers. (Gonzalez-Wippler 1989: 81-82) During a rogacion de cabeza - ritual cleansing of the head - coconut rinds are read for divination patterns. The person being cleansed must turn his back away as the eggun are asked a question because his fate is being decided by the dead. It is considered dangerous to observe this before a decision is made. The orishas are then asked a question, but since they symbolize life, the person does not have to look away. (Gonzalez-Wippler 1989: 80-81) .
             CEREMONIES AND RITUALS.
When a person approaches a santero for a registro, whether it be a divination, a cure, a sacrifice, an invocation, or for other ritual purposes, the client usually pays the santero a fee. This purpose that the fee serves is so that the santero may be able to buy the objects needed for the ritual or ceremony. The money a santero acquires is not enough to make a profit out of which to make a living.
