Gun Control

 

            Since the days of the pioneers of the United States, firearms have been a part of the American tradition as protection and as a means of hunting or sport. As we progress into the future, the use of guns has changed significantly because of the fast and steady increase in crime and the fight for the right to own a handgun. The introduction of legislation for gun control, to try to reduce the crime in the United States, has been a debated issue in recent years. Although many people feel that gun control violates the right of the people, given in the second amendment "the right to bear arms." Controlling distribution, sales and the registration of guns and gun owners is necessary because of the high rate of violent crimes involving guns.
             The United States is the most heavily armed population in the world. There are about 200 million and 60-65 million legal users who have one or more guns. Many people think that the second amendment gives citizens the right to bear arm. However, according to the Supreme Court decision on October 13, 1983 the possession of handguns by individuals is not part of the "right to bear arms." The second amendment only .
             applies to the states right to keep militaries (Long, 78). Some people believe that guns do not kill people, that people kill people. Yet handguns are used 2.5 times more often than any other murder weapon. We require driver licenses for vehicles and drivers, so is it necessary to require licensing for the more dangerous weapons-guns? Mr. Charles Orison, the Vice President of the National Council to Control Handguns, said that gun control laws are only anti-crime laws; they do not regulate the citizens from using firearms for legal purposes. .
             Gun control, as we know it, consists of the government restricting the ability of individual citizens to purchase weapons. The different types of gun control vary from waiting periods between when you purchase the gun and when you actually get it, background checks so that high risk people can't purchase guns through legal channels, and completely banning certain types of guns.
