The intention is not to harm the person because this behavior falls within the sport's rules and regulations. For example when a player roughs or verbally abuses another player in order to get the puck or create aggressiveness.
Is Hockey a Cure For Violence?.
Various sociologists see sport as a cure for violence because natural human instincts are violent. These natural instincts are released and occur during the sport. Freud believed that every human being has a death instinct which is part of the human psyche. If the energy is not released during sport, it will eventually build up into a rage that will harm one self or others. Freud believed that sport is a means of releasing this violent energy that he called catharsis. Ethologists also argue that aggression and violence is part of evolution and without violence no species would be able to survive. These are all valid and reasonable arguments, but there are also arguments that do not support the views of Freud and ethologists. There is no real evidence to support the fact that aggressiveness and violence is produced biologically. If that fact were true, people would solve their problems through violence and not socializing. Human behavior cannot be related to animal behavior since humans are more complex than animals. The instinct theory also suggests that sports are a solution to violence, but there are also some sports that do not involve violence. Also, there is no real research to support the fact that sport participation is a way to release aggressive energy. It is seen that hockey is taught to many younger children. Many of these children when asked why they enjoy playing hockey, their response are for fun. There might be various fights that also occur during a child's hockey game, but their main concern is fun for game and not producing violence towards other children. Not too many people would start a fight in public because it is an unfamiliar place that has no rules and unknown consequences, or there would be people fighting ever time there is a dispute.
