When Two Stubborn People Dispute, Nothing Gets Solved

Socrates appeals more to interpersonal relationships and following the laws than to Crito's argument that it is okay to break the laws because of the outcome. In this instance Crito approaches the situation poorly because Socrates does not believe in the argument he is making. .
Socrates is on a different level of thinking than Crito and he tries to show Crito a different perspective on this troubling situation. Socrates begins to think about what if "the laws and the state came and confronted us and asked: "Tell me, Socrates, what are you intending to do? Do you not by this action you are attempting intend to destroy us, the laws, and indeed the whole city, as far as your concerned?"" (Plato 50). Socrates realized that if he were to escape from prison not only would be breaking laws, but he would be wronging the people of his city. He believes that the laws are good and shouldn't be broken. He also sees escaping from prison as mistreating the people of his city and therefore he will not do it. Socrates stance is the laws should not be broken, especially after one has already been broken. The laws come from the "fathers" of the land and one does not disobey their father. Crito's opinion is that it is okay to beak the laws and Socrates should escape from jail. While Socrates is making his argument Crito is agreeing with what he has to say. Socrates does not give Crito a chance to speak during his argument and as a result Crito gives up his fight. These two men are unable to come to a conclusion because of their strong opinions. Socrates won because he put up a bigger battle. He would not let Crito have his way because he disagreed with what Crito had to say. .
Another example of the inability to persuade comes from Sophocle's Antigone. In this play Antigone's sister, Ismene tries to stop her from committing the crime she is about to execute. Their brothers were killed in the battle against Thebes.
