Theme:A Game of Cards and The Child

In the stories "A Game of Cards" and "The Child" by Witi Ihimaera, the theme love in both stories interests me. This theme is clearly portrayed in the character Nanny Miro for her family and he4r family for her in "A Game of Cards". It is also clearly portrayed in the character Heta for Nanny Violet and Nanny Violet for Nanny Pita.
In "A Game of Cards", Nanny Miro didn't want to move to a bigger house despite having sufficient money to do so. This clearly shows that she really love her family and didn't want to move to a luxury house because her old house held many memories of her family. According to the narrator, her house was a big treasure filled with many trophies and photographs. This fact is interesting because not many people would be willing to stay in an old house if they had the money to move to a luxury home especially in a modern world like this where comfort and luxury is important.
Another example that shows the theme love is when Nanny Miro constantly give her "haddit" kids money despite always complaining about them asking for money from her. An outsider would not always give money to people who constantly seeks help and money from them. This shows that Nanny Miro really love her "haddit" kids despite always referring to them as "haddit". This idea is interesting because she shows love to her "haddit" kids who didn't really treat her very well and never get fed up of giving them money despite claiming so.
The third example is that when Nanny Miro was dying, many people came to her house and played cards to keep her company. In the story, it states that "the house overflowed with card players even outside the house near the window where Nanny Miro could see". This shows that people today love and cared for Nanny Miro and did something that she really likes (playing cards) to please her. I found this idea interesting because not many old people in this world have so many caring people to pay them a last visit when they are dying.
