Intercultural Communication

The environment around you stimulates your actions, this happens under any circumstances. Some key factors in determining your communications are location, occasion, time, number of people, and cultural surrounding. When you are out of town and do not act the same way you would if you were in an environment such as your hometown or even your home. While sitting at a wedding you would never jump into the air and just start screaming at the top of your lungs. You do not do this because the occasion is wrong as well as the time. Timing is everything; you don't want to speak out at a time when everyone else is silent, which would be rude and inappropriate. A large or small group of people can also have a major affect on how you communicate. If you are talking to a small group of people you may not have to speak as loud or with as much force. On the other hand speaking to a larger group may force you to speak louder and/or enunciate your words so that the group may better understand you. The last systematic characteristic is cultural setting. This one is rather simple to understand. Being in a certain cultural setting causes the interaction you have people to change according the culture you are in. Being in an environment where the society is dominantly African American you would never make a joke about someone's color. Like is said, "This is a given.".
"Wherever we go, whatever we do, self is the sole subject we study and learn," was said by Emerson. He was talking about the idea that no matter who and how we communicate it is essentially about how we want people to see or hear us. Many people have trouble understanding that the way we think about or selves, is sometimes the way people think about us as a person. When trying to find the best way to communicate you must first be able to communicate with yourself. If you cant communicate with yourself, what hope do you have of communicating with other people.
