Where the Red Fern Grows

This story is about a ten-year-old boy named Billy who lives in the Ozarks. He is always seeing men hunting with there hounds and really wants to become a coon hunter. He asks his mom and dad for fifty dollars to buy two hounds but his parents don't have the money. Billy's grandpa owns a store in town and his grandpa told him that he could have a job there to save up for the hounds. .
Billy works for his grandpa for two years before he has enough money to buy the hounds. Once he gets the fifty dollars he orders the hounds right away. .
In a week he walks to a town called Tahlequah and picks up the hounds. On the way back he decides to name the boy Old Dan, and he named the girl Little Ann. .
Once he gets back home he immediately starts to train the dogs for coon hunting. He goes out and trains them every day and before long word gets around town that he has really good coon hunting dogs. .
The Pritchard boys bet Billy one day that his dogs couldn't tree the ghost coon. So Billy of course went to go try. While his dogs were after the coon the Pritchard boy's dog got loose and went after Billy's dogs. When Billy's dogs were hurting the boy's dog the oldest boy went after Old Dan and Little Ann with an ax, so Billy tripped him and he fell on the ax and died. .
After this happened Billy is shocked and he doesn't hunt for a while. Then one day when he goes to see his grandpa at the store his grandpa tells him that he has entered him in a coon-hunting contest. His grandpa is confident that he can win. The next week Billy, his father, and grandpa all load up and go to the tournament. .
During the tournament it seems as if the hounds have given up because they are freezing, so Billy builds a fire and warms them up and they finish strong and end up winning the tournament, which includes a gold cup and three hundred dollars. .
A few weeks later Billy is out with the hounds chasing what he thinks is a coon but turns out to be a mountain lion and it kills Old Dan.
