I have always wondered if there are any differences between the generic brands of food verses the "brand name?products. The generics are, most of the time, cheaper. So does cheaper mean cheaper product, I always ask myself when I stand on the ales and look at the two similar products next to each other. I bet not many people actually look and compare which is better, even yet are there any differences. I decided to answer this question I have had for the longest time. There are probably many ways people can decided whether one product is better than the other. The color, smell, and the taste probably can distinguish the difference, but what if you can do any of these when considering comparable products. For this field report, I determined that I would use the nutrition labels are my guild line. After all, health wise, it should be the most important fact which we should base our purchases on. The three products I settle on were Coca Cola vs. Safeway Select brand coke, Ragu spaghetti vs. Safeway spaghetti sauce, and Real Torino's spaghetti noodles vs. Safeway Select. .
The first product is something almost everyone drinks, coca cola. Besides the taste preference, nutritional value does not benefit one or the other. Safeway Select does have 10 more calories and 2 milligrams of sugar more than Coca Cola. Both only provide minimal amount of Percent Daily Values. The major difference is Coca Cola has 10 milligrams more sodium than Safeway Select. Yet, Coca Cola advertise as "VERY LOW SODIUM?on its nutrition facts. If someone was trying to avoid high sodium intake, it would be more beneficial to buy Safeway brand. .
The second product is spaghetti sauce. I"m sure many people have purchase the cheaper versions while if it is on sale, will purchase the better name ones like Ragu. Looking at Ragu Old World Style, it has 2 more grams of fat than Safeway, an amazing 370 more milligrams of sodium, and 3 more grams of sugar.
