An ideology irrelevant to the needs of modern society, and that capitalism alone could provide a solution to the needs of humanity, and therefore this system was eternal; representing the ultimate, rather than a transitional, phase in humanity's long development (Workers Party of Belgium, 1998). The capitalist market, it was claimed, would quickly wipe out the backward economic legacy of Stalinism and bring growth and development to Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). (Socialism Today, 1998) The capitalists proclaimed they had laid the foundations for a new era of faster world growth. One of the foundations was the Asian economic miracle', which in 1997 fell to its knees. Another was the peaceful integration of the former Stalinist states into the world market of capitalism. .
On August 17, 1998, Russia effectively defaulted. The Russian government devalued the rouble by a third, something that only three days previously, Yeltsin had vowed not to do. It imposed a 90-day moratorium on some foreign debt repayments; and it decided to restructure the domestic debt market. (Workers Party of Belgium, 1998) Faced with this reality, even such and enemy of socialism as the Financial Times was obliged to proclaim on its front page of 28th August (1998), the headline: "Muscovites' faith in capitalism crumbles."" Just a few days later, the Sunday Times on the 30th August (1998) commented on the collapse as saying "in the bad old days when Russians were red - which may yet be remembered as the good old days - they used to preach that capitalism contained the seeds of its own destruction. Nobody predicted that the best way to bring about the down fall of the capitalist system might be for Russia to embrace it- .
Since the conversion from communism to that of capitalism, Russia has been pillaged by the mafia bourgeoisie and the robber barons of international monopoly capitalism.
