Do you agree with Thomas Jefferson?

Yes, I agree with Thomas Jefferson's statement that, "Unfortunately, the tree of liberty must occasionally be watered with blood." When living in a country that provides no basic civil liberties to the population, sometimes the only way to attain these desired liberties is through bloodshed.
One example of this is the student protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989. The students were protesting the need for political reforms and intellectual freedom. Although no actual changes were reached, the estimated 4500 civilians and 1000 soldiers did not die in vain. The Peoples Republic Of China's handling of the situation outraged the international community and brought intense media coverage on the government in China.
Another example is the American rebellion in 1776. The population of the thirteen colonies were opposed to the unfair taxation by Great Britain. The colonists were protesting the fact that they had to pay taxes to a monarch that had little to no actual authorityin a country that was across the ocean. Much blood was shed and many died in the fight for the freedom for the thirteen colonies to govern themselves. The fighting between the United States and Great Britain finally ended after the war of 1812.
These are but two of many examples of blood needing to be spilled to attain sought after civil liberties and freedom, which illustrates the point made by Thomas Jefferson.
