In Whitman's poem "For You O Democracy,"" Whitman celebrates the greatness of democracy while proclaiming his individualism, patriotism and love for his country. Democracy seems to be the ideal form of government for Whitman. He announces his intent to intertwine the states by existing friendships and establishing new friendships throughout the land. This is clearly evident when he states, "I will make inseparable cities with their arms about each other's necks, by the love of comrades, by the manly love of comrades- (as quoted in Bellah, 44). He believes that through democracy; people have a chance to become united and feel a sense of connection. A major theme that runs through Whitman is his love for America, and the freedom and individual spirit, which this country promotes.
The writings of Walt Whitman express a democratic poet in relation to government, John Winthrop focuses more on the religious aspect of humanity and government while Thomas Jefferson incorporates the two together. When comparing Whitman to Winthrop and Jefferson, I believe that the three obviously had similar views on government except Winthrop puts everything in his life towards God. Their connection is partially contributed to the fact that all three believe in the power and freedom of religion while .
living a free live of acceptance. I think that Winthrop would probably state that Whitman writes with a mixture of hope and despair believing affection will solve the problems of freedom instead of believing God will solve the problems.
