I have read, watched and heard many different arguments about the right and wrong of homosexuality. I"m from a religious middle class family, and I have mostly middle class views. From my upbringing and experiences about the topic of gays and gay marriages, the most common opposition is that the gay community is anti-God. As for myself, I"m not very church going and I don't know the bible all that well, so if someone tells me homosexuality is against the bible I have no source to tell me other wise. .
Peter Gomes" argument is quite an eye opener. It takes him a while to get into his argument. He doesn't state his side at first but after the fifth paragraph it is very apparent which direction he is heading in. .
He rebuttals against all nine biblical citations used as the scriptures against gays. He gets four of the citations out of the way quickly; by saying they are simply about forbidding prostitution by men and women. I would have rather seen him go into more detail about these particular ones. A sentence or two about each passages meanings would have been much more powerful than a six word summary. .
Then comes the rebuttal of Leviticus, and the Holiness Code. Although some of the prohibitions are obvious, eating of raw meat and adultery, the other preventions seem so ancient. Farmers, most of whom are religious, now widely practice planting two different kinds of seed in the same field. Not being able to wear garments made of two different yarns is just plain dumb. This argument by Gomes really sets up the fact much of the bibles bans are not practiced in this era. .
He continues on stating the real truth and meanings of the biblical citations that are used as anti-homosexuality. None of which actually state homosexuality is wrong, according to Gomes. He also states how interpretations play a huge role in determining bible meanings. It seems to me to be following writings that can be interpreted for two completely different sides of an argument are illogical.
