Personality

What is personality? How does ones personality develop? By definition personality is the complex of characteristics that distinguishes an individual; the totality of an individual's behavioral and emotional characteristics. Dynamic through continual changes and adjustments to events that affect the person; distinctive because each person is born with inherited and specific traits; and circular in the sense that while roles people play in society affect their personality, their personalities influence the way roles are seen and accomplished. .
Personality consists of a person's actions, habits, attitudes, beliefs, values, goals and so on. But it is how that personality is developed that fascinates me. I like to compare personality to the chameleon - changing and adapting to the different surroundings it stumbles upon. Similar to the chameleon changing colors to blend in with its background, people alter, even if only slightly, their personality and how they act and respond depending on the situations they encounter. The human species is taught the need to "fit in" through the ways of society, media and family. I believe that no matter how "independent" a person claims to be, they are in some way emulating someone else. Therefore those who try harder to be "different" consequently become the norm. In the end society as a whole is conforming to the norms that individual personalities set. Returning to the definition, personality is circular. .
"If you are trying to be like everyone else then who is going to be like you?".
