Theories of personality critique


            
             Critically evaluate either process theories of motivation or two of the main theories of personality. Your critical evaluation should explore the strengths and weaknesses of the various theories and models. The critical evaluation should be no longer then 1500 words.
             THEROIES OF PERSONALITY.
             Within the following critique the writer will analyse the dynamics of personality and critically evaluate theories of personality. This will be done in terms of their given strengths and weaknesses. The critique will examine the two main approaches of personality studies namely "nomothetic" and "idiographic". The writer will draw succinct conclusions on the basis of these theories and also demonstrate how the nature of learning is a contributing factor to the genetic construct of ones personality, and the traits they display. .
             In order to critically evaluate theories of personality the term "personality" itself must first be defined, "a persons own distinctive character" or a "person with distinctive qualities especially pleasing ones" Oxford Dictionary. .
             Burger describes personality as, "Those personal characteristics that result in consistent patterns of behaviour" Burger - 1986.
             On analysing the notion of nomothetic approaches a clear void in interpretation is encountered. The Oxford Dictionary expresses the person within personality and distinct traits or characteristic attributes. The nomothetic approach of Hans Eysenck concerns itself with quantifiable data that can be interpreted in a numerical fashion thus removing the intimacy of a person and their personality traits. Hans Eysenck can be viewed as a pioneer in the nomothetic theoretical approach as he produced objective evidence of the main personality types by sampling large amounts of data, his investigation consisted of some 700 service men.
