Gloria Estefan


             On September 1, 1957, Gloria Maria Milgrosa Fajardo was born in Havana, Cuba. When she was only two years old, her family fled from the Castro government of Cuba and came to live in Miami. Her father had been a Cuban soldier. When Gloria was just a little girl, her father was recruited for the 2506 Brigades. He was head of the Tanks Division and led the invasion at the Bay of Pigs, the unsuccessful attempt to oust Castro from power, in 1961. Her father spent a year and a half in jail while Gloria and her mother lived in a Cuban ghetto outside of Miami. During this time, she sang for women whose husbands were in jail too. Her father was released in 1963. The family moved to Texas where her sister, Rebecca, was born. Gloria's father volunteered for Vietnam and after two years he came home. He was soon diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He was exposed to Agent Orange in the war. Gloria took care of her invalid father from the age of eleven to sixteen. During these times of stress she was comforted by playing her guitar and singing songs.
             In 1975, Gloria started college at the University of Miami to study psychology. One day she went to a Cuban wedding where the Miami Latin Boys playing. At the wedding, Gloria was asked to sing a few songs. The band leader, Emilio Estefan, who became her husband three years later, asked her to join the band. The band's name was then changed to the Miami Sound Machine. Up until about 1980, the group had mainly been playing at small gatherings and had recorded an album for a small local label. That same year she had her son, Nayib. .
             In 1980, CBS gave the group a contract for four Spanish albums. The year 1984 was the turning point for Miami Sound Machine. They released their first English album. The first single "Dr. Beat" became a huge hit. The songs "Bad Boy" and "Conga" were two of their singles. "Conga" became the first single to be on the Billboard's pop, dance, black, and Latin charts at the same time.
