It was 1969, an era where the Vietnam War was being protested, and a segment of our nation was rebellious against any or all-traditional values of their parents. This rebellion was represented by some of America's youth by creating countercultures that were identified with rock music, long hair, anti-war protests and drugs. The so-called younger generation was trying to escape the bigotry that was portrayed in their lives and they sought after a life to which they could feel free. The young people failed in their identity crisis and in the end blended in with the rest of society. These free spirited individuals also known as hippies stirred up lots of emotions and gained lots of disapproval from society. As the mitts of our society was going through undeniable changes the movie "Easy Rider" was produced. .
The movie has two main characters Wyatt (Peter Fonda), and Billy (Dennis Hopper). Wyatt plays the loud, aggressive, arrogant role, while Billy plays the levelheaded, mindful, and insightful role. Wyatt, called Captain America by Billy wears a black leather jacket with the American flag imprinted on the back and a star-and-strips helmet. These two take part in what is known as a road trip, heading out to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Their road trip is made possible from a drug deal taken place in Mexico. They get their money and stash it in their motorcycles. The stashing of the money in the motorcycle is said to symbolize the fact that money fuels the American Dream. The movie follows the road trip idea throughout the film. The movie's motif that stuck throughout the movie, was a combination of bigotry and hate. Although the movie represents many themes, I found bigotry and hate to be the most significant. .
I felt strongly that the motif trying to be represented through the movie was bigotry, when Billy and Wyatt were thrown in jail for parading without a permit. I think the police officers were just looking for any reason to put them in jail.
