Breaking the Norm

This past weekend, a friend and I broke a social norm concerning dress behaviors. We dressed up like guys and went to three different locations over the weekend and gauged people's reactions to us. Over the course of the weekend, we went to the mall, our class at the Mueller Center campus, and we also attended a dinner party put on by our parent's friends, all in effort to observe people's reactions to our clothing. .
We chose this norm to break because we wanted to see if the reactions we would get from people would be the reactions we expected. We assumed that most people would point or stare at us, and maybe say something to us if they were really bold; plus, we though that we could have a lot of fun dressing up like guys. That way, we could imitate what our guy friends do and basically make fun of them while having a perfectly good excuse to do so.
The first time we dressed up like guys, we went to a dinner party, put on by our parent's friends. We were supposed to wear short dresses, like if we were attending a cocktail party, but we decided to try to shock some of the guests there and spice up the evening. We showed up in baggy jeans with boxers showing, wife beaters, and upside down visors on. Most of the people who attended the party were either too disgusted with our dress or too polite to say anything, but they gave us dirty looks throughout the evening. My friend and I could tell that they opposed the idea of us "cross-dressing". A couple of guests asked our parents about our choice of dress, and a few brazen people even interrogated us, asking us if we were participating in a school activity, to which we replied "no" and kept the charade going.
Our second testing site took place at the mall. We showed up decked out in Nike basketball shoes, net shorts, wife beaters, button-up plaid shirts, and backwards baseball hats, complete with two gold chains for both of us. Most of the feedback we received was negative.
