Breaking the norm

Norm is an expected way of behavior that develops out of a group's values. Therefore I chose to sing in two different places in the public. I am a Chinese and I do not really appreciate when someone, who is not well known or who does not "expected" to be a "super star", perform in the public. So my friend and I went to Monterey Park and sang in front of the Chinese superstore to test on that. When I was singing, my friend pretended he was an audience as I expected that people would stop by if they see someone does so. However, only a few people really watched the show to its end. While I was singing, I heard some negative comments, such as "he is crazy" etc, in Cantonese and in Mandarin, as I only understand these Asian's languages. Moreover, I saw that some people looked at me in a weird way while I was performing, the way they looked at me did not seems happy. One of them shouted, "stop that f-word singing!" in Chinese. I sang for only more than a minute. After I finished the singing, my friend and I got onto the car and left that place real fast because no people seem to appreciate the show.
Next, we went back to Los Angeles. This time we exchanged our role. He sang and I was the audience. Unlike my experience, he got more audiences than I did and they seems happy to this show. It was also a short show, but most people were clapping when he was done singing. One couple wanted to pay us but I stopped them and told them that we were just fooling around. We left immediately once we finished this performance.
Then I asked 4 of my Chinese friends what would they think if they see a normal resident singing in front of the superstore. All of them gave negative opinion. However when I asked the same question to 4 of my non-Asian friends, only one of them gave me negative answer. If I were asked the same question, I would not give a positive answer either.
In this experience, I can see that the Chinese and American react so differently to a same event.
