When you analyze any movement weather it was the Pan Africanism movement or the Civil Rights movement; Black women have played a strong role in shaping and becoming the sole back bone of the struggle for equality and justice. We give much respect to Marcus Garvey, Martin Delaney, Edward Blyten and many other powerful and influential black men that have truly made a strong impact in the lives of African Americans and Blacks around the world, but what about our black women? What role did they play? To better explain the role of black women in these struggles as mentioned above, let us use an analogy for better understanding. .
When watching television news the first person we see is an anchor enlightening and informing us on current events locally, nationally and internationally. These are the people who have the glamorous job and that people will always remember. However, when you really gaze on who brings forth the information and who writes the scripts that the anchors read from the teleprompter, it is not the anchors that do this. It is the producers who bring forth the information to the public. It is the producers who are in the background telling the anchors what to say. It is the producers who control the structure and format of the whole entire news segment. After each segment there are no credits given to the producers only recognition to the anchors because that is what all the public see. In this same manner, these powerful black men are the anchors that will always be remembered because they were at the fore-front of the struggle of justice, and that was what all people saw. Black women played the role of the producers who structured and formatted the struggle and outcome of any movement. They never received recognition because a lot of people didn't know nor saw what was going on in the background. Of these many black women who supported the struggle for justice and equality we narrow our focus to Adelaide Smith Casely Hayford.
