In the Book The Legend of King Arthur Merlin, the father figure to Arthur, helps him by letting him retrieve Excalibur from the rock. This in turn fulfilled the prophecy that whoever retrieved the sword from the stone would become the king of England. In the book The Hobbit Gandalf the Grey, protector of the hobbits, helps Bilbo and thirteen dwarves regain their lost treasurer from smog the dragon. In The Hobbit Gandalf is protective of all hobbits, loves them, and he also nurtures them. Over all Gandalf is a father figure that all hobbits can look up to.
A father figure could be defined as some one who sets a good example, some one who protects his children, or just some one who can be looked up to. A true father would love his children no matter what, even if they robbed a bank. A good father interacts with his children and teaches them the skills they will need to know to get through life. Most fathers in this high pace world work but he still makes time for his kids; that is what makes a good father. .
In The Fellowship of The Ring Gandalf shows how he is protective, just like a father to his son. While the fellowship is trying to cross the bridge at Kazzad Dum to escape Balrog, Gandalf, while trying to protect the fellowship, is tragically pulled down to his death with The Balrog. This illustrates how Gandalf was willing to sacrifice his own life to protect the life of the fellowship. That is the ultimate sacrifice for a father to make, the life of his own for the life of others. Another example of Gandalf protecting hobbits and others is in The Hobbit when the Wargs and Orcs trap Bilbo and the dwarves in the trees trying to escape attack. Gandalf being the father figure scares off the Warg and Orcs by throwing flaming balls at them. This action also shows how Gandalf protects all around him, another father characteristic. .
In The Fellowship of The Ring Gandalf shows his love for Bilbo when he comforts him while he is giving up the ring.
