             Do you have such strength, determination, and strong will as Phoenix Jackson, an .
             old colored woman in the story "A Worn Path". The story took place in December .
             around Christmas. Phoenix was very small and carried a thin, small cane made from an .
             umbrella. She was determined to walk a long path through the woods to get to town for .
             her grandson.
             Phoenix came upon many obstacles along her way. At first, a torn bush got caught in her dress, then she had to go through a barbed-wire fence. Phoenix Jackson often talked to herself so she wouldn't feel alone. On her long path she went through a tall field of dead corn, there she was frightened by a scarecrow, but she laughed it off and danced with the scarecrow to calm her. .
             Phoenix was walking beside the road when a black dog came up out of the weeds beside the ditch and scared Phoenix to where she fell. A young white hunter finally came along and found her. The hunter asked Phoenix where she lived and if she was on her way home. She told him she lived back yonder and that she was on her way to town. The hunter reached into his pocket for something and without noticing a nickel fell out of the pocket. When the hunter was not looking Phoenix reached down and picked up the nickel and put in into her apron pocket. She felt like she was stealing. The hunter and his dog chased away the black dog that scared Phoenix and shot at it. When he got back he lifed the gun and pointed it at Phoenix. The hunter asked her if the gun scared her. She said .

             "no sir, I seen plenty go off closer by, in my day, and for less than what I done. He was surprised she was not scared and said that if he had a dime he would give it to her. Him saying that made Phoenix feel better about the nickel she put into her pocket that the hunter dropped.
             When Phoenix made it to town she seen red and green electric lights strung and crisscrossed everywhere.
