Innocent Medea

In the tragic tale of Jason and Medea the reader is faced with a dilemma. It is unacceptable to condone the killing of Medea's two children, however it is also unacceptable for Jason to try to exile his wife after she has born him two children, forsook her royal heritage for him, and even murdered for him in the past. So, what to think and whose side to join remains the problem in this case. Is Medea innocent, or is Medea guilty? Medea is innocent! She was driven by her undying love for Jason which led her to insanity and eventually to the murder of her own two children. Medea did everything for Jason; she helped him in the quest for the Golden Fleece, she saved his life in that same quest, and she even killed her own brother for the sake of Jason. A person driven to this point of love for another person only to have their loved betrayed by that same person is enough to drive a person insane, which is exactly what happened. .
When a person loves another person to a certain extent they would do almost anything for that person that is loved. This was the case with Medea. She had an indescribable and absolute love for Jason. She ate, drank, and slept thinking about Jason. However this is not all. It is evident that she loved Jason because she was willing to kill her own brother in his name. She was also quick to give up her royal name and all of the royalty that came along with it to follow Jason to Corinth and be his bride. .
If Medea had not fallen in love with Jason, and helped him when he was in quest of the Golden Fleece in far off Colchis, Jason would never have survived. To enable him to escape she forsook her royal heritage and murdered her brother, and again when the pair returned to Greece she committed murder for his sake. (pg. 188) .
This quote shows the ends that Medea was willing to go in the name of Jason. However when these bonds are broken it can be unbearable, people become intolerable and it could even drive a person to insanity.
