Digital versus Film

""Your have to be pretty brain dead` to be involved in film at this time and not realize that we are going through a very serious evolutionary step in how we acquire images"" (Austin), said Rick McCallum, producer of "Episode II: Attack of the Clones." Like McCallum, other directors and producers are jumping on the digital band-wagon. The special effects and images desired by directors can now be achieved with this new technology. Such movies as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Lord of the Ring: Fellowship of the Ring" use digital images to improve scenery and even make imaginary characters. On reference to the cost-cutting ability of going digital, "It also allows distributors to transfer movies to theaters using computer files" (Violanti), and finally erasing the cost of reproducing the film on 35mm for viewing. Post-production also becomes less cumbersome with this system; ""You"re not dealing with transfer of film, which is an overnight process"" (Zipern). Along with getting the best special effects and saving on post-production work, digital cameras cost less then regular film cameras, and provide high definition for home cameras as well as for the movies. Alexandra Pelosi was able to make her documentary following the political campaign of George W. Bush with a digital camera. ""The digital camera gives you high quality and I was able to sit in my living room and make a documentary"" (Violanti), explained Pelosi. .
             2. Like any new technology, there are going to be some flaws. Digital filming has had numerous complaints and complications. Digital film may allow special effects to excel, but the images themselves have less detail than traditional film does (Austen). Action scenes with a lot of movement also lose their touch when transferred on digital film; "Stop-action animation (the frame-by-frame manipulation of three-dimensional models to simulate movement) is also impossible with the digital system" (Austen).
