History Coursework

The sources show different attitudes for different reasons or purposes. Some of the sources are propaganda, one a photo, one a statement from a modern text book and the last a tribunal testimony of Clifford Alan. Sources "A" and "B" are giving reasons for men to enlist in the army. Source "A" uses men's feelings for women to persuade tem to join the army. The reason why this is used is to get men to sign up without using conscription. Source "A" should be reliable as it was one of the posters used in the war campaign and it is more than likely that women wanted the men to go to fight and help to defend their and their wives, mother or other female relations country. Source "A" is useful because it would help historians get an idea of what the government was thinking at that time. This source favours recruitment.
Source "B" uses one of the few attacks on Britain the "attack on Scarborough" to Show the Germans as evil and to give reason to the inhabitants of Britain to crush the "German Barbarians". This sort of poster would boost morale of the people working in England. The people manufacturing weapons, farming, nursing, the women's land army or any other job would now have a reason to why they were doing their job. This would urge them on to work harder and produce, grow or manufacture more of whatever they were producing, growing or manufacturing. Source "B" is not reliable because women and children were killed, but not probably as many as it makes you think were killed. It would however be useful to historians because again it would give them an idea, to what the government was thinking, showing that the government were keen to use enlistment rather then conscription. This source favours recruitment.
Source "C" shows vast quantities of men some with their families queuing outside a recruiting office. This picture may have been used to convince other men that if this many people were signing up "why don't you".
