The Outsiders

The Outsiders is an outstanding novel by S.E Hinton about two gangs, the Greasers and the Socs. The low class Greasers from the east side and are a disgrace to society whereas their rival gang the high class Socs abbreviated for the Socials have fancy Mustangs with all of the cuts but the Greasers have other qualities. The Greasers function as a loving and caring family for the youngest and most vulnerable Greasers in particular, Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cane. The Greasers make Pony and Johnny feel as if they belong to a real family not just a gang, they care, support and protect them when they are in danger and the Greasers feel as if they have the responsibility to look after both Ponyboy and Johnny.
In The Outsiders the Greasers made belonging very clear to both Pony and Johnny. In the novel Ponyboy was proud to be a Greaser, "What are you professional heroes or something sent from heaven."" "No were Greasers- (page 104). That is what Pony said to the Primary School teacher after he had saved the children from a burning church getting away with only minor injuries. Pony knew he belonged after he had ran up to Darry and hugged him "Darry-, I said, "I'm sorry- He was stroking my hair and I could hear the sobs "Oh, Pony, I thought we'd lost you (page 107). Pony knew after that moment that Darry did love him just as much as Soda. Johnny also knew that he belonged to the Greasers even though he did not belong to his real family. "Okay- I yawned. Gosh, but it was cold. "If you get cold or something come on over to our house. "Okay- (page 56) Pony told Johnny after they had fallen asleep on the waste ground. The Greasers made both Pony and Johnny feel like they belonged to a loving and caring family no just a gang.
In the novel the Greasers provided Pony and Johnny with care, support and protection. The Greasers cared, supported and protected Pony when Two-Bit gave Pony a smashed bottle to defend himself with against the drunk Socs "He snatched up an empty bottle, busted off the end, and gave it to me, then reached in his back pocket and flipped out his switchblade- (page 52).
