Reality Television and the American Public

A show like Are You Hot? could easily make someone feel insecure about their outer appearance if they feel they do not live up to the standards set by this show. Shows like this could lead to such problems as unnecessary plastic surgery or extreme unhealthy dieting. Another problem with reality television shows is that they are mostly based on shallow and superficial values. Some of these shows are based upon physical appearance, while others are based on who can outwit and lie the best to avoid getting voted off of the show. These shallow values lead viewers to believe that it is alright to go ahead and live their own lives based on these same superficial values. This last problem especially applies to children who are watching these television shows, because they do not yet have a firm set of beliefs and morals and can be easily swayed into using the values they learn on television as their own. Finally, reality television presents the problem of widespread voyeurism. Every night millions of Americans tune in on their television sets to watch what other people are doing and how they are reacting to certain situations. Millions of people are prying into other peoples lives to see the scandal and drama that takes place within these shows. This causes people to become less concerned with their own lives and what is going on around them, because they are too concerned with the scandals and lies that are going to take place that night on television. When people become less concerned with their own lives, it not only affects that person, but it also affects those around them. What if we lived in a world where everyone was concerned only with what someone else was doing? We would never succeed or get anywhere in life, therefore it is obvious why this should be a cause for concern.
Although reality television presents many possible problems to its viewers, there are possible solutions to go along with these problems.
