Children of The River

Between 1975 and 1979, hundreds of thousands of Cambodian citizens fled their homeland in search of refuge. This was largely because the Khmer Rouge had taken control of Cambodia, and was killing citizens, by means of either execution, working to death, or starving. As many as 150,000 refugees escaped to America, where many of them live today. Although some refugees are able to live normal lifestyles, many are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, causing nightmares, inability to sleep, depression, and social insecurity. Several refugees have witnessed the death of a loved one, and because of the nature of their religion, many feel guilty for these deaths. It has been proven that Cambodian refugees suffer 10 to 20 times more depression than average Americans do. Not only have these people suffered mental and psychological scars, but physical ones, as well. Starvation and head injuries have been a cause of memory loss, and heart problems are more than common in Cambodian refugees. One woman's account of post traumatic stress disorder was extremely violent. She recalled babies being born on the streets during the march to camps. The babies were often thrown on the sides of the streets to die, most likely with hysterical mothers watching as their newborn babies are killed. By the end of the Khmer Rouge's rule in Cambodia, over 1.7 million Cambodians had been killed, many of these relatives of refugees. When I think about this, I realize that many of the refugees probably knew over 10 people who died. I also realize that if something like this were to happen today, even more killing would probably result. One woman claims she has not slept one night in over 4 years, making simple things, such as driving, much more difficult. The Khmer Rouge's ruling of Cambodia has caused much pain and unrest, as well as testing the limits of human sanity.
