Roberto Clemente was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico, on August 18th, 1934. He ran track but then decided to play baseball. He first played in Puerto Rico, but then he went to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1955 he traded to the Pittsburg Pirates and became the best player on the team. He had an average of .317 of his lifetime battings (he had to get at least one hit out of all three each time he was up). He got married in 1964 and had three sons who were all born in Puerto Rico. .
He is known for fielding, throwing and hitting. In 1966 he was the most valuable right-field player. In 1971 he was also named the best player in the World Series. He was elected to go on the Baseball Wall of Fame, which was actually against the law because you had to be retired for at least five years before you can get elected to be on the Wall of Fame. He was the second baseball player whose picture appeared on stamps. Before he died he was named the first player to get 3,000 hits throughout his career in baseball. .
He was a humanitarian, risking his life to help others. In Central America there was an earthquake and he was there giving out medical supplies, food and clothing to the wounded. .
He died in a plane crash sometime in the year 1972. His body was never found. He left his sport, city, wife and children behind. They continue to support everything that he did, as well as continue to help other dreamers.
