Other People's Children Essay

It is a place where children should be able to begin their lives without any boundaries. The past has made this country great because we have been different than all other countries. We are supposed to provide all men an equal opportunity. A child should not be limited of opportunities because of the color their of skin, their social rank, or the choices that they didn't make. .
Gifted children are everywhere, yet their gifts are often lost due to poverty and lack of opportunities. Jonathan Kozol's focus is to show the inequalities in the lives of children of inner-city communities to the children that live in wealthier, suburban homes. Children of the less successful are not only burdened with the environment they live in, but obstacles in school prevent them from having an education compared to wealthier schools. A lack of funds and materials keep the children at a disadvantage. As they grow older, their hope gradually fades. Their focus moved on to other things that may be harmful to them. Their aspirations are lost. .
Segregation is also found when compared to a wealthy school and a poor one. A majority of the inner-city schools houses the minorities of America. Is this nation so racist that we are to forget about our youth? Are we leading them to a path of crime, drugs, and failure? The connection between the failure of helping poor children and the number of poor adults in prison becomes all so clear. .
While the poor communities are struggling, the wealthy communities have a variety of choices and opportunities. This is an ongoing cycle maintains the social classes. Wealthy children have better opportunities and more chances to go into a good college. Thus, they will have a better chance at having a good financial life. Poorer children will have to struggle to even get into a mediocre college. The advantages of the rich rid them of competition against the poor. .
If asked to help fixing schools, there would be no doubt a wealthy person would not care.
