Brazil


            
             It is the fifth largest nation in the world, and is the largest and most populated country in South America. Its population is about 176,000,000 and it has over 8 million sq km of land. In most of the country the climate is warm all year long, except in the southern part where they may experience sub-tropical temperatures. The land consists of flat and rolling lowlands, plains, hills, mountains, and a coastal belt. It is comprised of 26 states and a federal district. The government is a republic with a president and vice-president. The current president is Fernando Henrique Cardoso. The people are a diverse group with many customs and traditions.
             Geography.
             Brazil is located on the eastern coast of South America. It has a total area of 8,511,965 km2 and is slightly smaller than the United States. Brazil the equator passes through the northernmost area of Brazil. It is bordered by every country in South America, except Chile and Ecuador. To the south of Brazil, you can find Uruguay. Argentina and Paraguay are to the southwest. The northwestern borders are Columbia and Venezuela. Finally to the north, Brazil is bordered by French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname. Brazil is divided into four regions- the Amazon lowland, the Guiana Highlands, the Brazilian Highlands, and the costal plain.
             There are many rivers in Brazil. One of the best known is the Amazon River. It is the second longest river in the world, but is the river that has the most water. The Amazon River begins in the Andes Mountains and flows through Brazil to the ocean. There are more than ten smaller rivers that flow into the Amazon. The Amazon is large because of the climate and its location near the equator. The area around the river is known as the Amazon lowland. It has the largest tropical rainforest in the world. .
             The Brazilian Highland is located to the south of the Amazon region and is the largest region covering over three-fifths of the land of Brazil.
