John says he is not Carols father because she is like a child and he thinks he's acting as a father figure to her.
Further on in the act we see Carol once again pleading for help, we see this from the repetition of the words help and helped. She finishes her paragraph with the simple sentence "I"m stupid". She uses this as a reassurance mechanism. John being the caring man he is falls for this and reassures her, just like he reassures his wife. The conversation then fragments into verbal tennis (adjacency pairs) with Carol and John exchanging simple sentences. We see Carol getting frustrated, this is shown by the repetition of "and", it also shows her lack of vocabulary. We also see Carol hinting for help once again. " I"m don"t know what I"m doing and I"m failing". We get the idea of her pleading by the use of the stative verb. This also relates to the power issue and communication.
We get an idea of the origin of the play through the use of dialect words such as "flunk" and "garbage".
As we progress through Act1 we see John and Carol growing close. We see this when Carol is starting to take interest in John. "People said you were stupid?". This makes John and Carol talk more openly. It also closes the power gap. They grow closer and closer, the non-fluency features used show this.
Political Correctness and American Myth are two important themes in the play. John is telling Carol how he has been influenced by political correctness. It also hints towards Mamet, its like Mamet is showing how political correctness makes the language bland. John towards Carol mentions American Myth. American Myth is Carol thinking she has to go into higher education to be successful in later life. With John saying this they seem to have gone back to their teacher student relationship, with the power gap opening up once again.
John once again becomes a father figure towards Carol, this is because John showing his sensitive side by comforting her, by using the soothing word "sssssh".
