Principles and Tenets of Organizational Behavior


In our rapidly changing world where the lines between national and global economies are harder to distinguish, its role in predicting future trends and managing change is vital. If the above-mentioned facts do not provide the impetus to motivate you to take the study of Organizational Science seriously the following reasons should.
             According to the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina, about "40 percent of new management hires fail within their first 18 months. When the center looked into why these new hires failed, it found that failure to build good relationships with peers and subordinates was the culprit an overwhelming 82 percent of the time" (p.5). In an ever-tightening labor market where competition for high performing employees is stiff, a knowledge of the basic tenets of Organizational Behavior would be extremely helpful in developing a manager's interpersonal skill. Considering the cost of turnover to an organization in training and lost productivity anything we can do to keep the high performers would be extremely beneficial to our organization.
             Because Organizational Behavior is specifically concerned with employment-related issues, some of the issues it addresses and what we can learn from it may surprise us. Issues that affect our organizations everyday such as work, absenteeism, employment turnover, productivity, human performance, and management, are addressed in OB. Other components of OB which are relevant to organizational management include "motivation, leader behavior and power, interpersonal communication, group structure and processes, learning, attitude development and perception, change processes, conflict, work design, and work stress" (p.16). .
             Underlying the science of Organizational Behavior is the belief that behavior is not random, but rather it stems from values and is directed toward rewards that the individual believes, rightly or wrongly, are in his or her best interest.
