Martian Chronicles

"Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty." Gandhi captured the entire truth of mankind in his statement. It is inevitable that human beings are not perfect, and they will never be. The human race is not free from problems, but far from being considered monstrous. In the statement, "Mankind is a monster", it is labeling all men and all women as vicious, heartless ogres. No one is so nave to think that we live in a utopian society; there will always be sinister people in our world. However, it is completely inaccurate to say mankind, as a whole, is a monster. Throughout Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, the bombardment of what appears to be humans taking over Mars and demolishing it is hinted. In reality, humans are not scheming to ruin everything, but through a series of unfortunate coincidental events, Mars falls. Mankind did not invade and conquer Mars; its demise was due to factors uncontrollable to humans. Mankind is not a monster just because some of its members are misguided.
Captain Wilder proves his heroic nature in June 2001. In contrast, Spender symbolizes a monster due to his negative actions. He is an archaeologist, therefore wanting to preserve the past. He kills Biggs, Cheroke, and several other men in order to uphold his views. Captain Wilder sees past this confused murderer. He realizes Spender is not completely appalling; he is just as mixed up as a yolk in a scrambled egg. Being a noble man, Wilder commands that Spender be shot only in the stomach, a clean death. To further prove Wilder's kind, not monstrous nature he offers a white flag in order to converse with Spender. During the conversation, Wilder connects with Spender and they travel to a Martian town. This shows the trust Wilder has for a murderer. Perhaps Wilder is too forgiving, too trusting, but certainly not a backstabbing monster. When faced with the chance to kill Spender, the Captain gives him another chance.
