Why We Choose the Foods We Do

There are many factors that influence a person's food selection. These factors include: economic, social, psychological, and physiological considerations. Physiological factors affect the body's need and desire for food. Hunger can be defined as the feeling of emptiness, weakness or pain caused by lack of food. It becomes more intense as time passes, until we are unable to think of something else other than food. Take Phil, for example. Phil works long hours, and his job is hectic. He is adopting irregular eating patterns and is probably snacking instead of eating proper meals throughout the day, which could cause him to become hungrier between meals.
Appetite, on the other hand, is the desire for food even when the body is not hungry. Appetite can be triggered by sight, aroma and the mention of food. Phil has a very strong appetite and eats food even though he is not hungry. He is triggered to eat more food by the smell and sight of the food, and he struggles to control his urges. Satiety is the feeling of fullness that comes with eating adequate amounts of food. Phil eats foods with a low satiety value. This causes him to eat more as low satiety foods digest quicker than high satiety foods, which makes him less full and hungrier. .
Phil is male and therefore he is required to have higher protein intake in his diet. He is required to have 64g of protein per day, 1000mg of calcium and 8 mg of iron. Males require more kilojoules than females as they are larger in size, have a higher BMI rate and use more energy. They also require more protein as they have a higher proportion of muscle tissue. Because Phil is a 55 year-old male, his basal metabolic rate is slowing down, his BMR is 7,100Kj, and while he needs to consume more kilojoules than a female his age, he is consuming too many of the wrong foods and not doing an adequate amount of exercise to remain in a healthy weight range.
