Values and Serving in the Military

The choice to serve in the military is a valued one in most circles and should be treated and respected as a decision. Having an intense desire to serve your country isn't something that everyone understands. .
When you think of your parent what is the first word that comes to mind besides love? How about respect! Respect is a huge value that I think we are exposed to in understanding that we are not to disrespect our parents, teachers, police, or firemen. This is what I remember. The military in general is all about R.E.S.P.E.C.T. and for good reason. You are supposed to respect your leaders, whereas when you don't we have a break down in the system and thing only get that much harder. The opposite side of that is the reason we have jails for those who don't respect those around us and the law.
Respecting your leaders is the way of confidence in order to survive in combat or any situation that you are faced with. If you do not have respect for that leader than you don't trust that leader and that will have a sever effect on the team and its ability to respond properly as needed. Mia Saunders who attends the University of Cincinnati in the ROTC program there states in her handout titled, "Army Values " that, "Respect means treating people as they should be treated and as you expect to be treated " (p. 142). This has been around since the beginning of time or at least since the BC comics. The values are particular unique in separating us from animals.
The Army Values program has been going on for over two decades as more now as training tool for all incoming soldiers. I had found such a training tool handout that explains each value in-depth and explained by a short story of it in action. TRADOC (Training and Doctrine Command) is out of Ft. Knox, Kentucky and is responsible for all the manuals that are written and are used throughout the U.S. Army no matter how small it is. When I had come across this handout I could not resist.
