Liberal Society and Tolerance

Being tolerant is not being indifferent; it is having a position, understanding differences between the opposing view and respecting it. A liberal society believes that humans are naturally free. Therefore any restraint on their liberty by the state, in the form of laws, needs to be justified. There are certain arguments for this view, which are strife, fallibility and autonomy; the fact that a Liberal society should be, by definition, tolerant. However there are views, which contradict this that will be explored further.
The first argument, which suggests that a liberal society should tolerate a minority culture that doesn't respect its values, is the threat posed by strife. If opposing is part of human life, then the alternative to tolerance is conflict. But this conflict won't solve, as matters of belief cannot be solved by force. Such strife threatens the survival of a society; this can be seen through anarchy. Therefore, in order to avoid any form of strife, including war, struggle or problems, we need tolerance. Liberalism on this view is a 'mondus vivendi'; this is a way of living by eluding the very serious harms of conflict, fear and humiliation. An example of strife is the reported act cannibalism on 13th January 2014. Ouandja Magloire, a man part of a Christian mob attacked a Muslim in the Central African Capital of Bangui. Magloire spotted his victim sitting on a minibus and decided to follow him. .
Eventually, he had 20 young people with him forcing the bus driver to stop. The mob then dragged the man off the bus, beat and stabbed him before setting him on fire. Magloire was then seen eating the man's leg. He stated that it was revenge for a Muslim killing his pregnant wife, sister-in-law and her baby. This true story makes people wonder what should be tolerated in our society today. We can object that Liberals' views are not tolerating but resigning. If we resign, then we think that if we could impose the right beliefs, then things would be better.
