Mill's argument from fallibility in favor of freedom of speech is that, if an opinion is censored, then we are assuming we are infallible, as we cannot know that it is certainly untrue. Though the censored opinion may be false, it may contain some elements of truth. .
Considering that opinions rarely contain the whole truth, it is only when opposing opinions clash we are left with the truth. Therefore it can be seen that to silence an opinion could be to silence the truth. However this argument that freedom of speech enables us to uncover the truth more effectively than selective censorship does, can be contradicted. Hence if we don't tolerate certain beliefs and values, we are assuming infallibility, which could deprive people of the truth. If those beliefs and values are tolerated though, the truth is at risk of being lost again.
