Materials, Resources, Technology: writers journal, poster board.
             PROCEDURES .
             Introduction (5 minutes).
Writers, today we will be learning how to write about a main idea and add detail to it. A main idea is anything you wrote about in your journals. If you could open your journals up to the page you wrote about for homework, and pick a sentence you want to write more about. I will read my journal for an example. "Yesterday I bought a kitten! I adopted her from the local humane society at Petsmart in Christiansburg, VA. I fell in love with her the day I laid my eyes on her. She is a greyish color with one tiny orange spot on her head. She weighs about 1 pound and she fits in the palm of my hand. I named her cupcake, Cecee for short. She is so sweet, but LOVES to get in my business, whether it's homework or just walking around my apartment. She is super hyper at times. She slept pretty well last night (her first night at my place) but woke me up for 2 hours meowing. I love her unconditionally and I can call her all my own. " .
So writers, what is one topic in my journal I could talk more about? Maybe what she looks like, or what she does around my apartment? Perfect. Well, it's your turn writers to pick a sentence and write more about that sentence on another sheet of paper.
             Middle (15 minutes) .
All right writers, stop your work for now. On the board you can see I have an umbrella with raindrops coming from it. The umbrella is the "main idea" - in my case I will write "Cecee the Kitten"".
