NCAA Athletes Deserve Payment

). Money is a necessity for college students to be able to hang out or participate in many activities. Despite schools usually paying for food and athletic related activities, athletes still hang out with friends in non-school related settings. Aside from simply having "fun money," athletes frequently need money for their families. Often, scouts find talented athletes in poor areas (i.e. the inner city) where families are poorer." These inner city kids provide for their families in many cases or at least aid their families financially by maintaining a job. Yes, they often go to college for free, but they still lose the ability to send their families any money because they have no time for a job.
As Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette points out, when an agent comes around offering handouts, the athlete almost has no choice in deciding whether to turn them down. Falling victim to the temptation of these benefits could mean finally being able to provide for their families (Bouchette on the Steelers" n. pag.). Many agents, in addition to handing the athlete money, even purchase homes, cars, clothing, and even finance trips for the athlete's family to visit them. When student athletes in situations such as this realize the benefit it could have on their families, it becomes even harder and less likely for them to refuse the agent's offer. .
The NCAA and individual colleges and coaching staff fail to provide sufficient supervision and education for their athletes, concerning agents and handouts. If schools want to prevent their players from accepting bribes from agents, coaches need to be aware of their players' personal lives. The current deficiency in the personal involvement of coach staff allows agents to tempt players with money. According to Bouchette, the NCAA "has no jurisdiction over agents, just the athletes and the schools. It even seems powerless to discipline the coaches " ("Bouchette on the Steelers"" n.
