Preschool Child Education and Growth Analysis

For the sake of the subject's confidentiality, I will refer to the child I observed as "Brandon"." I observed Brandon in one of the classrooms at Rainbow Kids Integral Preschool in Mira Mesa, San Diego. Brandon is five years old. The observation took place on Monday, March 10, 2014 in the early morning. I observed Brandon for a little over two hours. The classroom population consisted of one primary teacher, one teacher's aide, and 12 children ranging from ages 3-5. Throughout the paper, I will be discussing Brandon's activities during the two hours that I observed him. I will also describe his physical, cognitive, psychological/emotional, social, and moral characteristics. I decided to pick Brandon as my observational subject because he noticed that I was an unfamiliar face in the classroom and greeted me which I thought was adorable. .

Brandon looks physically on track with his developmental progress in terms of height and weight. In comparison to the other male students his age, they were about the same height and weight. During the arts and crafts portion of class, the children were asked to create wall decorations for St. Patrick's Day. They were instructed to cut out four heart shapes out of construction paper and combine it to make a four leaf clover. This is when Brandon's fine motor skills and handedness were brought up to my attention. I noticed that some of the younger children had difficulty using the scissors and had to ask for help from the teachers. I sat next to him and watched as he outlined the shape of a heart with a crayon then cut it out using his left hand. Brandon independently completed the cutting without asking for any assistance from me. I also noticed that when his shoe lace came undone, he was able to lace them up by himself. During recess, Brandon displayed his gross motor skills. I observed Brandon playing monkey in the middle with his classmates, Tommy and Jimmy.
