Education Inequality in New York City Schools


            Compulsory school attendance laws and the great expenditures for education both demonstrate our recognition of the importance of education to our democratic society. It is required in the performance of our most basic public responsibilities, even service in the armed forces. It is the very foundation of good citizenship. Today it is a principal instrument in awakening the child to cultural values, in preparing him for later professional training, and in helping him to adjust normally to his environment. In these days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education. "This was the opening quote to the court case of Brown v.              Education inequality has been a social issue in the United States between white and ethnic minorities. The issue first began when the legal abolishment of slavery was enacted but the racial stigma still remained in power. The public schools in the United States were experiencing legal separation in schools between white and blacks, even though the schools were supposed to receive equal resources there were still an inequality. African-American students in the South began to go to universal secondary education in 1968. In 1980 the federal courts succeeded in eliminating the system of legalized segregation in the southern schools, and investigated many of the northern cities, and demanded that the school districts include minorities to create an education equal between districts (Kozol, 1991, p. 3).
             African-American weren't the only race that was experiencing the inequality of education but as well as Latinos and American Indians.
